Welcome to Sunset Childcare!
Here at Sunset Childcare, I believe that every child deserves a safe, nurturing, and entertaining environment to develop and thrive. My home-based daycare, located one block off 19th avenue, is designed with early childhood development in mind, thus creating a space for children to expand their self-help skills, social-emotional development, and intelligence. Within my play-based environment, your little one will receive responsive care, develop routines, and be presented with meaningful interactions to help them blossom into all of their potential. In my care, your child will explore the world around them at their own pace with my encouragement every step of the way, all the while learning to communicate, develop both gross and fine motor skills, as well as make new friends. My goal is to provide a secure and enriching atmosphere where children can be stimulated with activity and comfort while giving parents peace of mind knowing that their child is in loving hands. Sunset Childcare offers two spacious playrooms, secluded nap rooms, and a private outdoor space. I am a verified and licensed provider (#384005094) and only have between four and six enrollment spots (depending on the ages of currently enrolled children) to ensure a very small environment with lots of individualized care.
About Me
My name is Catherine and I have been helping raise children since I was a child myself! I grew up assisting my mother in her home-based infant daycare learning the ins and outs of child-rearing, and I loved every minute of it. I am extremely grateful to have had this upbringing because it led me to a myriad of opportunities within the childcare profession. I began babysitting as I got older which led me to nannying for a variety of unique families. While having 15 years paid experience in the babysitting/nannying field, I also have over four years experience as a preschool teacher. I really enjoyed my time as a preschool teacher, and am excited to get to teach again in my daycare. I believe from having my experience teaching in preschool, I am confident that I can get your child equipped with all of the knowledge and skills they will need to thrive in preschool. Throughout the years of my career, I have worked with a variety of ages from newborns to preteens, as well as a variety of special needs and diverse backgrounds amongst children. I have always felt drawn to work with the 0-3 years age group, and thus pursued an education in this. I have a degree in early childhood development, am certified specifically in infant care, received my teaching certifications, and have trained as a postpartum doula. As well, I am CPR & First-Aid certified and am a Mandated Reporter.
My Philosophy
I believe that each child is unique, thus proper teaching does not occur in a “one-size-fits-all” manner. In order for a child to learn, they must feel cherished in their environment. This feeling of security comes from gentle care, an inviting surrounding, established routines, clear boundaries, and confidence from their primary caregivers. I want every child in my care to feel loved, celebrated, and important! I intend to teach children how to communicate their needs, how to treat other people as well as their environment, how to crawl/walk/climb/etc, as well as a general curriculum of ABCs, 123s, colors, animal sounds, shapes, foods, names, etc.-all the other adorable knowledge little ones possess. I believe learning “curriculum” at this age (0-3 years) is best taught through playing and exploring the world around them rather than strict designated learning times. Children are always learning! Everything around them is knowledge for them to absorb so thus I let them explore at their own pace in an environment free from rigidness and ridicule. It is important to me that each child learns the beginnings of self-sufficiency, as this will be vital to them in preschool and the outside world. I intend to build this foundation by teaching them how to feed themselves, soothe themselves, communicate for themselves, make decisions for themselves, and trust themselves, of course within age appropriate reason and under a loving eye close by to help them through any struggle. I want each child in my care to get to blossom into their full authentic selves! A major part of this is partnering with parents, and thus I want parents to feel included every step of the way. I believe in daily communication between myself and parents, partnership in helping their child reach their developmental milestones, a safe space to discuss any questions or concerns, and most importantly, I want all parents I work with to feel confident that their child is receiving the best possible care!
